longlongago

A castle has existed on this site since the 12th century. Documents from the 13th century list a Heinrich Mayerhofen and two others as owners. One of his descendants sold the property in 1377 to knight Haertel of Teuffenbach, in whose family the castle remained for 230 years.

In 1777 the count of Kottulinsky (a title bestowed because of bravery in battle against the perpetually invading Turks) took over the estate. The British occupied the castle following World War II, and after a period of neglect, the Kottulinsky family reacquired the title and transformed the property into a stunning hotel.

Pamela’s Perspective

Obermayerhofen is a good central location for those who are interested in exploring the Schlösserstrasse, or castle road, the Weinstrasse, or wine road, and the spa towns (non-German speakers can tell which they are because the towns start with “Bad” or bath in their names) in the southeast corner of Styria.

Just a few kilometers away from Obermayerhofen is the thermal springs and hotel complex at Blumau, designed by famed Viennese architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. You can take advantage of the spa as a day guest.

The road from Vienna to Graz is a fast, easy drive. Within little time, you’ll find yourself speeding through countryside of forested hillsides crowned by ancient fortresses. Schloss Obermayerhofen makes a great choice for those who wish elegant accommodations outside of the city.

Weddings

Everything about Schloss Obermayerhofen is first rate. Guest rooms are huge and luxurious, and each is individually decorated in a different classic style. Some rooms feature canopied beds and Oriental carpets. Bathrooms are well appointed.

Although the castle’s ancient origins are evident in its architecture, softness and elegance prevail. After all, how menacing can a castle in the palest of yellows be?

Although the hotel lies off the A-2 autobahn, the surrounding woods and the castle’s 25-acre garden create a world of quiet.
