Documents pertaining to the castle, originally named Pfaffenberg (“Monk’s Hill”), can be found at Bamberg Abbey. In 1485 the Ochsenbergers became the first noble family to reside at the castle. Two hundred years later the lord bishop of Passau, Reichsgraf Johann Philip von Lamberg, bought the castle and two others nearby. Until 1840 the Lamberg family administered the Kitzbühel law court. The castle became a family guesthouse in 1885 and a hotel in 1965.

Pamela’s Perspective

The fashionable ski resort of Kitzbühel has been popular for over 100 years, especially among visitors from the UK and Germany; however, even outside the winter season, a myriad of activities keeps the town buzzing.

The suites at Schloss Lebenberg are furnished elegantly, with canopy beds the centerpiece in some. Most rooms are in modern buildings. Splurge for one of the castle apartments inside the main building for the best experience.

Despite its international popularity as a fashionable ski resort, Kitzbühel has retained the atmosphere of a small walled village.

On the list of deluxe accommodations is the Hotel Schloss Lebenberg, standing above town on a hillside with sweeping views of the valley and mountains.

From certain angles the walls and turret of the original castle will remind you of former times, but the modern villa behind it will quickly draw you into the 21st century.

Growing away from its castle origins, the hotel has become a resort enterprise complete with spa and health facilities, restaurants, and lots of leisure-time activities.
