longlongago

The first fortress appeared on this site in the 12th century, taking advantage of the natural surrounding swamps to create a moat. Over the centuries the castle changed hands among various noble families, including the duchy of Burgundy and the Holy Roman Empire. By the early 16th century, and now under dominance from Spain, the castle could no longer defend itself. Jean de Thiant destroyed it, but replaced the structure with a Renaissance castle.

In the 19th century Henri Maurice renovated the castle and created the English-style park.

In 1997 Jean Pierre and Christine Coquerelle acquired the property and spent the next two years lovingly restoring it.

Pamela’s Perspective

The best rooms here the ones that overlook the garden. Unlike many castle hotels, this one has air conditioning.

Don’t let the somewhat uninteresting residential area dissuade you, pass over a small bridge and a charming, moated Renaissance castle awaits you. Without a traditional reception desk, the friendly staff will welcome you—much like you’re entering a private home.

The Château d’Aubry is an excellent value in the world of castle hotels. Spacious guest rooms have a bit of an old-fashioned look to them, but the high-definition TVs with forty-five international stations make a concession to the 21st century.

If the weather is fine, you can enjoy drinks and dinner in the garden. Take time the visit the surrounding park. Walk among the centuries-old trees and listen to bird song.
