Relexa Schlosshotel CecilienhofA 20th-century palaceWhen people come out to visit the amazing complex of Potsdam's Sanssousi Park, they don't realize that they can spend the night in one of the park's most historic palaces. The hotel operates in only a small part of the palace; the rest is open to the public for day visits. Walking paths lead from the hotel through gentle woods and along two lakes. And with the English country manor design, you think you're somewhere in the UK and not Germany. Spacious guest rooms have views of either the park or the lake. Individually decorated, they are comfortable and attractive. The wedding suite features a large canopied bed. You can dine either in an elegant, candlelight dining room or on an outdoor garden terrace when the weather is fine.

Crown Prince Wilhelm von Preussen and his wife, Princess Cecilie, had the palace constructed between 1914-1917, the last Hohenzollern castle-palace to be ever built. Perhaps taking after his grandmother, the Empress Victoria (whose own mother was England's Queen Victoria), Cecilienhof was designed to resemble an English country manor. Cecilienhof's greatest fame, however, comes from it being the site of the famous Potsdam Conference of 1945. From 17 July to 2 August, President Truman, British Prime Ministers Churchill and Atlee, and Soviet Premier Stalin negotiated the fate of Germany and Europe at the end of World War II. The U.S., Great Britain, and China also issued a proclamation, which gave Japan an ultimatum to either surrender unconditionally and immediately or face "prompt and utter destruction."
Pamela's PerspectiveSchloss Cecilienhof is an excellent alternative to staying in Berlin, especially if you have a car. Transportation into Berlin is easy and efficient. And you'll also be first in line in the morning for entry into the park's other palaces.
