Although mostly in Italian, the iCastelli site is an incredible data base of hundreds of Italian castles. If you're planning a trip to Italy to explore castles, visit this site first.

Italy is more than priceless art in palace museums, take time to enjoy the country's natural treasures found in the national and regional parks, reserves, and wetlands. This park site is an excellent place to start.

Abruzzo

Although in Italian, the website for Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga has wonderful photos, current news, accommodation listings, and information for hikers and bikers.

You'll find terrific explanations about the huge variety of flora and fauna, as well as details about hiking paths and activities, on the website for Parco Nazionale della Majella.

For readers of Italian, you'll find lots of visitor information, interactive maps, and information on volunteer work for the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise.

The Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo offers a website with detailed information about its offerings. In Italian. Although the site claims to have an English version, it's not completed.

Campania and Apulia

CAMPANIA

The official Pompeii site has an excellent virtual tour to hold you over until you can see the real thing!

The Ravello Concert Society hosts concerts from September to June at the Villa Rufolo and in the summer months at Chiesa di S. Rosa.

APULIA

For those of you who can read Italian, you'll find lots of useful information about the Parco Nazionale del Gargano here. The site describes the flora and fauna and has useful itineraries.

The official site for the Grotte di Castellana has enough pictures to give you an idea of what to expect during your visit.

Information on several castles of Apulia can be found on this site, including Castel del Monte. Some of the links are outdated, but the castle photos give you a good overview.

Lazio

The Vatican has an outstanding site with virtual tours and background of its art treasures and about everything else you would want to know.

The ancient Romans probably never dreamed that their Imperial Forum would have such a great website full of Roman history, photos, and a webcam.

The Villa d'Este in Tivoli has a site with visitor information and some good photos of the gardens and famous fountains.

To buy tickets in advance on the Internet to many of Rome and Lazio's archaeological sites, this official ticketing site provides the means.

Lombardy and Piedmont

LOMBARDY

Take a virtual tour through the galleries of Milan's Pinacoteca di Brera on its official site.

If you would like to learn about Milan's famous La Scala Theatre, its museum, or would like to attend a performance, its website has everything you need to know.

Mantua's Ducal Palace (Museo di Palazzo Ducale) is so vast that itineraries are offered on its website to best see the collection.

PIEDMONT

The city of Torino has a good museum site with links to every significant attraction.

Marche

A "Quintana" is a medieval jousting tournament held in various Italian cities during the summer. The pictures on this site will give you a good idea of what the event in Ascoli Piceno looks like.

The Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini has a very good site with lots of pictures for inspiration and visitor information.

The Grotte di Frasassi has an excellent site with virtual tours of the cave.

Opera buffs will find the site for the Stagione Lirica in Macerata offers program and ticketing information, as well as good photos of the venue.

Even though the site is in Italian, the pictures of the fortress at San Leo are outstanding.

The official website for Selinunte has wonderful depth of information and history about the ruins.

Although in Italian, you can click the various links to get an idea of how extensive Syracuse's Parco Archeologico della Neapolis is.

Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto

TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE

Trent's Castello del Buonconsiglio has its own site with a couple of pictures (in Italian). It has information about visiting three other nearby castles: Castel Beseno, Castel Stenico, and Castel Thun.

The Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites is an excellent for background information of the flora and fauna of the Dolomites, as well as for pictures and itineraries.

You would think with such a famous resident as Ötzi (the Iceman) in their midst, the Museo Archeologico dell'Alto Adige in Bolzano would have a decent information on their website. Mummytombs.com is much better.

Although in Italian only, the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio has a very pleasant site with information about all the flora, fauna, and natural wonders the park has to offer.

The Museo Ladin site has some basic information about Ladin history and culture.

VENETO

The Basilica di San Marco has a wonderful site with lots of background information and virtual tours.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection's site has a good run down of what you can expect to see during your visit and information about special exhibitions.

In Padua, the Scrovegni Chapel's site has pictures of its treasures and links to Padua's other museums.

Tuscany

Florence

The official website for Florence's Uffizi Museum is short on the way of pictures of its collections but has adequate descriptions of each gallery's contents. There's visitor information, but no facility to reserve tickets (you must call). Scroll all the way to the bottom to find the tab to switch the site into English.

Short on pictures but with lots of background information, Florence's Duomo has its own website.

Although this website for the Palazzo Pitti is in Italian, there are plenty of pictures to click on to get a good idea on what to expect during your visit.

Siena

Despite being in Italian, the website for the Museo Civico has fun rollovers to see what each gallery contains.


Everything you wish to know about Chianti Classico--the wine, tastings, history--is on the Chianti consortium's website.

Cortona's Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca (Etruscan Museum) site is mostly in Italian, with one page in English with visitor information. There are some pictures to give you a general idea.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa not only has an official site with more detail than you can imagine, but also hundreds of photos of every square centimeter of columns.

Umbria

The excellent website for the Galleria Nazionale dell' Umbria has plenty of information concerning its collections and visitor information. Despite the flag of the U.K. indicating the website is available in English, you'll find the text only in Italian.

The official site of the Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi is fairly extensive and includes an up-to-date concert schedule. In Italian.

The Duomo di Orvieto's website has visitor information, a multimedia display, photo gallery, and events calendar. In Italian.

For concert information on the Festivale dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto, their website should be updated as events are confirmed.

The Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini has a very good site with lots of pictures for inspiration and visitor information.
