The Real Alcázar of Sevilla maintains its own website where you can take a virtual tour, click on lots of photos, and seek visitor information. Sherry wineries around Jerez de la Frontera that offer tours are González Byass (makers of Tio Pepe), Garvey, and Sandeman (This site is a little confusing. Once on the site, click on visit sandeman.com to get anywhere). The Royal Andalucían School of Equestrian Art (in the Jerez de la Frontera website) has information on its events, the museum, and enrolling in its school. For those interested in the history of bullfighting in Ronda, the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda maintains a fascinating site. To reserve and book tickets for the Alhambra in Granada, visit the ServiCaixa site. You can also book tickets for musical and theatrical events on this site. In celebration of 400 years of Spain's favorite character, Don Quijote de la Mancha, a website with interactive maps of the various Don Quijote routes around La Mancha (including the windmills) is a fun travel resource planner. Seldom do you find good websites administered by cathedrals, but the Catedral de León runs one of the better ones with information about the cathedral and museum. In Spanish. The Catedral de Burgos also maintains a website with visiting information and a brief history. CATALUÑA-BARCELONA The Museu Picasso in Barcelona has a great site with detailed commentary on the evolving artistic periods of Picasso, with accompanying pictures. For the Museu Barbier-Mueller and its pre-Colombian art, you'll find hours, admissions, and transportation information on its site but not much else. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya not only provides visiting information but has educational commentary on each piece in its collection. Learn more about artist Joan Miró and his foundation before visiting in Barcelona at the Fundació Joan Miró. Take a virtual tour of La Sagrada Familia and learn about its history here. CATALUÑA Many of the Spanish monasteries have very good websites, and the monastery at Montserrat is no exception. Here you'll find information about what's available during a visit, accommodations at the monastery, nearby hiking trails, and even the performance schedule for their famous boy's choir. The Salvador Dalí Foundation oversees the legacy of the Surrealist painter. The link here will take you directly to the general information page for the Teatre Museu Dalí in Figueres, but you'll also find information about other Dalí museums. Several wineries in Cataluña welcome visitors. Among them are Miguel Torres, Bodegas Pinord, and Castillo Perelada, which has a 13th-century castle you may tour, as well. ARAGÓN If you are interested in the castles of Aragón, this website, although in Spanish, has pictures and visitor information for the major castles. Visit the Roman monuments of Mérida virtually, or take a tour through the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano. You can visit the Castillo de la Luna or even sleep there! The town of Guadalupe hosts a website--detailing transporation, history, fiestas, gastronomy, and crafts--that is far and above those of other communities. In Spanish. If you wish to visit the Real Monasterio in Guadalupe to sightsee or stay overnight, you'll find information on their site. The regional tourist office for Santiago de Compostela has a better than average site with photos and links. For anybody with an interest in walking the Camino de Santiago, there is a wealth of information out there. One place to start is with mundicamino, which has descriptions of the various routes and lots of links to surf.
The Patrimonio Nacional administers the properties once owned by the Crown but now belong to the Spanish State. Theses properties include the Palacio Real (Royal Palace of Madrid), the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, El Escorial, el Valle de los Caídos, and the Palacio Real in Aranjuez. This site has introductory information, some photos, admission costs (needs updating), and information on reaching the palaces and monasteries by public transporation. The official site for the Prado Museum has all the up-to-date information you'll need to visit and a brief summary of the collections with a few pictures. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum's outstanding website will surely inspire anyone to visit the real thing in Madrid. Each piece of their art collection may be accessed with accompanying commentary. The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia collection of 20th- and 21st-century Spanish art is unsurpassed, and their official website offers an excellent glimpse of what to expect on a visit. Normally, websites done by cities are pretty boring, but Alcalá de Henares has done a good job. There is a lot of useful information, history, and virtual tours of the city to help you plan a visit. For some terrific pictures of the castle at Manzanares el Real this castle site can't be beat.
The site for the Museo Guggenheim of Bilbao has extensive information on its spectacular building and everything you need to know to visit. You'll also find some information on its permanent collection, special exhibits, and various activities held throughout the year. Bilbao's other famous art museum, the Museo de Bellas Artes, is well worth a look. Pictures of the collections are on their website.
