longlongago

This palace has always been a noble residence. Graf (Count) Franz Anton von Waldburg-Zeil came into possession of the region in 1772 and established an administrative center nearby. Among his building projects was Schloss Neutrauchburg, built in 1785-6.

Probably the schloss’s most famous resident was Karl Graf von Waldburg-Zeil, who born at the schloss in 1841 and became known for his expeditions to Spitsbergen and Siberia.

Descendents of the family lived in the palace well into the 20th century. The mother of today’s Prince Georg von Waldburg-Zeil, Countess Monika, lived here until she passed away in 1953.

In 2008, the palace opened its doors to guests as a four-star hotel.

Pamela’s Perspective

Next door the Schloss-Gasthof Sonne is operated by the same management as Schloss Neutrauchburg. Here, they offer seven cozy and newly redecorated rooms at a lower price, but you go for breakfast in the main palace.
